Side effects of medicines are a very important aspect in the management of rheumatoid arthritis. Since these medicines are taken long-term, doctors ensure that side effects do not significantly affect patients. Steroids have the highest side effects among rheumatoid arthritis medicines. Therefore, steroids are introduced for a limited period and minimal duration. When prescribing steroids, supplementary medicines like calcium, vitamin D, and stomach protectants are given to minimize side effects.

Painkillers also have their own side effects, mainly affecting the stomach and kidneys. It's important to check creatinine levels before giving painkillers. Tests are conducted, and guidelines for stomach protection are provided to the patient. Before starting basic medicines for arthritis, such as DMARDs or biological medicines, every rheumatologist conducts specific tests to ensure your blood cells, liver function, and kidney function are normal.

Tests are repeated every two to three months according to guidelines to ensure these medicines are not causing side effects and are safe for the patient.
